“The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me.” – Martin Luther
I saw the word of God move today
as I studied and memorized a page
I glanced around
but a witness could not be found
to see the words display their hidden life
I clasped them tight
keeping them in my sight
following them with my mind
they ascended to their home
reaching for the Throne
I refused to let them go
I saw a glimpse of God above
his majestic love,
his strength unweakened
his grace unmatched
I remained silent and held on
mesmerized by celestial views
lifted by celestial truths
It was but a glimpse that I tried so hard
to capture with my mind
but it was infinite and deep
Then the world came back in full view
the noise pulled me away
dogs barking,
doors slamming,
life demanding
I looked down
the words stood still on the page
innocent and still
silently insisting they had not moved
& I had not moved
but I had
and they had
and we both knew it
But I had memorized the verse
and now held it firmly in my mind
as one holds a memory stone
I secretly turned it over and over
smiling at what it contained
what remained
Others may only see a simple stone
but I see a throne
and when I’m all alone
we ascend again and again
returning home
my spirit takes flight
to its hidden delight
within the word of God
that comes alive
through mediation and prayer.
