School’s Out

Devotional, Wednesday Woman / Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

“I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God
like a little child will not enter into it.” Mark 10:15

Dear Father,
Living across the street from an elementary school can be interesting to say the least, but lately I’ve noticed a change in the children. Their steps seem a bit lighter and smiles run from ear to ear. They seem eager and full of anticipation. The high-spirited chatter and laughter echoing from the playground cause me to sense something is about to happen. So what is causing this change in mood and behavior? Ahhh… school will be out for the summer. Something they have longed for is just around the corner. Freedom. These children have spent all year in a classroom and now they are ready to break loose. And again I have learned something extraordinary from the ordinary. Those children have taught me that my behavior should be full of anticipation and eagerness for the return of Christ. My laughter should resonate with hope and my chatter should be full of His story – the gospel. Something I have longed for is soon to happen. The day the bell rings (might sound like a trumpet) and I am free to go, promoted to my new home with you. No more tests, no more homework, no more stale sandwiches, no more time-outs and detention, and no more worries. Eternal summers (not Texas style but maybe a nice 75 degree temp) filled with joy upon joy. Oh yes, this brings a skip to my step! Meanwhile my days are lived out in the classroom of life. Some subjects I thoroughly enjoy and others I would just as soon skip. But they are on the required curriculum so I will take and retake them until I learn the principle. Now having gained this tiny bit of wisdom from these children, I just sit back on my front porch and enjoy the delightful scene across the street. Little people teach me so much. Bless them dear Father and use me to tell them about Jesus.

Much love from your student,
Penny
