Held by His Love: The Story of Two Rings

Daily Devotions, MorningMeds / Sunday, January 12th, 2025

Wedding rings are so much more than pieces of jewelry. They are symbols, reminders of love and commitment, visible testaments to a covenant made. When I look at the ring on my left hand, I see a reflection of the promises my husband and I made to one another, to love, cherish, and walk together through this life. But for me, a wedding ring doesn’t just represent my earthly marriage; it also points to something greater. That’s why I wear a second ring, on my right hand. Each ring tells a story, and together they remind me of God’s faithfulness both now and forever.

The ring on my left hand symbolizes my covenant with my husband. It reminds me daily of the blessing of marriage and the call to reflect Christ’s relationship with His church. Ephesians 5:25-33 beautifully captures the profound mystery of this union, likening a husband’s love for his wife to Christ’s sacrificial love for His bride. Through the ups and downs of life, marriage teaches us about God’s patience, care, and unwavering commitment. It’s an earthly covenant, one that binds two people together until death parts them. This ring is a precious reminder of the temporal gift of love God has given me in my husband, a love that mirrors, in part, the far greater love of Christ.

The ring on my right hand holds a different meaning. It reminds me of my eternal covenant with God. While my earthly marriage is for this life, my relationship with the Lord endures forever. Isaiah 41:13 speaks to my heart when it says, “For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’” I picture God’s steady hand holding mine, guiding me, comforting me, and assuring me of His presence. This ring is a tangible reminder that God’s promises are unshakable. Even when everything else fades, He will never let go of my hand.

When I wear these two rings, I am reminded that both my hands are held. My left hand points to the temporal covenant I share with my husband, a gift that reflects God’s design and goodness, his love, provision and protection through him.  My right hand points to the eternal covenant I have with Christ, the foundation of my life and the source of all hope. These rings speak to me of faithfulness, my husband and mine, but more importantly, Christ’s faithfulness to me and my own commitment to Christ to love, honor and serve Him for all eternity.  Together, they tell the story of love that is both temporal, eternal and complete.

One day, the ring on my left hand will be no more. Death will separate my husband as it does for all earthly marriages. But the covenant symbolized by the ring on my right hand will endure. God will still be holding my hand, leading me safely home. This truth gives me comfort, courage and strength because I know the One who holds my right hand will never let go.

So, I wear these rings as a testimony, a visible reminder of two covenants: one for this life and one for eternity. They remind me to live faithfully, to love deeply, and to trust fully in the God who has given me both temporal and eternal blessings. Both hands are held, and I am never alone, secure in the grip of His enduring faithfulness.
