Overcoming Hesitations to Blog

Writing / Friday, August 25th, 2023

In the digital age, personal blogs have become powerful tools for sharing ideas, insights and experiences with a global audience.  Blogging offers Christians a unique opportunity to spread the gospel, encourage others, and strengthen community among the saints in a digital age. However, like any endeavor, starting a blog can come with its own set of procrastinations and anxieties. Here are 10 common reasons why Christians may be hesitant to start a blog and some practical tips for overcoming these hesitations.

1. Fear of criticism or controversy

The biggest concern for Christians considering blogging is fear of criticism or fear of engaging in controversial discussions. It is natural to want to avoid negative answers, especially when discussing matters of faith. However, it is important to remember that respectful communication can lead to mutual growth and understanding. Approach controversy  with empathy and understanding. The Bible encourages us in Proverbs 15:1 (ESV): “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger”.”

When dealing with complicated issues, research thoroughly and present contrasts for the multiple perspectives.  Focus on presenting sound doctrine that has been well-researched, and don’t be discouraged by differing opinions. Encourage respectful discussion in the comments section, and be prepared to highlight positive contributions and insights.

Handling comments from readers who seem more interested in arguing or expressing their opinions can indeed be a challenge.  Remember to set boundaries and provide guidelines if necessary. Moderate  comments as necessary and as a last resort block those who only seek disruption.

2. Insufficient knowledge

Another common hesitation is the feeling that one does not have enough theological knowledge to blog about faith-related topics. It’s important to understand that you don’t have to be a theologian to share your experiences and insights. 1 Peter 3:15  advises: “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope.” Your personal insights are valuable and can encourage others. Be humble and honest about your level of knowledge and approach your blog as a learning opportunity. Research as you go. Blogging will give you the opportunity to increase your knowledge and understanding.  Ask a mature believer to read through your drafts.  Remember that your unique  perspective as a fellow believer is what makes your blog authentic and relatable.

3. Concern about Representation

Many Christians thinking about blogging have legitimate concerns about misinterpreting the Bible or misrepresenting their faith. The burden of accurately communicating Christ’s teachings can seem overwhelming. Misrepresenting faith is a valid concern.   James 3:1 states, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.” Take blogging seriously. Once again, invest the time necessary to fully research and comprehend the subjects you will be writing about. Consult dependable resources, pastors, respected theologians, and trustworthy books. Practice humility. Don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know or what you don’t fully understand and still have unanswered questions on yourself. No one has all the answers. Ask readers to offer their insights and resources

4. Privacy Issues

Christians may be reluctant to share their personal experiences or testimonies because they worry about their privacy. Sharing your faith can motivate and inspire others, even though it’s important to keep sensitive information private. Proverbs 11:13 reminds us “Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.” Never divulge what is not yours to share. To maintain privacy, use aliases or change specifics as needed. Instead of revealing, concentrate on the larger message and the lessons learned.

5. Time Constraints

It can be challenging to blog consistently, especially for Christians with busy schedules. The challenge of juggling blogging and other obligations is real. Start out modestly and make reasonable goals for your posting schedule. More important than quantity is quality. Plan ahead and set aside specific times for writing. To prevent burnout, keep in mind that you can modify your schedule as necessary.  Set aside a specific amount of time every day for writing from 30 mins to 1 hr or make a goal to write a specific number of words every day. Start small with 500 and try to increase.

6. Comparison and Perfectionism

One common obstacle to starting a blog is comparing oneself to well-known bloggers or worrying that your content won’t be perfect.  Recognize that every blogger has a beginning. Accept your individual voice and viewpoint. You can grow from your flaws, and you will get better with time. Consider your own life experiences rather than others’.

7. Impact on Personal Life

Christians may be discouraged from beginning a blog due to worries about how blogging may affect their interpersonal connections and church communities.

Let family members and the congregation at your church know that you plan to blog. Specify the topics you will and will not discuss online. Ask for permission to share a story and remove references.  Maintain a healthy balance between your offline relationships and online presence.

8. Technology Challenges

For those who are less tech-savvy, the technical aspects of creating and maintaining a blog may seem intimidating. Use simple blogging platforms that don’t call for a lot of technical knowledge like WordPress.com or Blogger.com. 9. Lack of Confidence

It is easy to become discouraged from blogging about our faith due to self-doubt and lack of writing confidence.  Start off by writing for yourself, and as you get encouraging comments from readers, your confidence will grow. Be in the company of encouraging mentors and friends who will be there to assist you. Remember  Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

10. Fear of Overcommitment

Many Christians worry that the obligations of blogging would overwhelm them and cause them to overcommit. If this is you, clearly define your blog’s priorities and goals.  Remind yourself why you want to start a blog, make sure it is an outlet and topics that energizes you instead of drains you, not a have to do but a get to do. Be reasonable with your self on posting commitments and schedule, start small. Don’t be afraid to take breaks or change your strategy as needed.

Although starting a blog as a Christian may cause some hesitance, it also presents a huge opportunity to  encourage others, fellowship with other believers and to witness for Christ as you share your faith to the world.
