In our battle against sin, it does not matter if we win or lose. Victory belongs to the Lord. (Pro. 21:31) What matters is that we fight against it with whatever level of ability we have been given. As John Owen so aptly said, “we must be killing sin or sin will be killing us.“
There are some sins that we can easily overcome with the strength the Lord has given us. There are other sins that we will spend our lifetime fighting against only to be interrupted by the Lord’s return, then we can be sure He will finish them off for us.
But my question is this for those who have been taken captive, are you now fighting with all your heart, all your mind , all your strength and all your will against your adversary; or have you given up and learned to just live with it, no longer putting up any defense at all?
When Christ returns will He find us fighting, kicking and screaming against it as an unwilling hostage being held against our will for those sins which we cannot free ourselves from? Will He find us crying, praying to Him still, pleading for our release from its grasp on us? Will he find us hostile against the sin, trying to weaken it with all the strength and power he has given us to fight it with? Will he find us continuously searching for a way out, a way of escape so that we can gain our freedom against it and return back home knowing we do not belong in it’s dwelling place or anywhere near it?
Or, will he find us dining with it, laughing and enjoying it’s company and pleasures? Will he find us seduced by it, and not missing him or watching and waiting for him at all? Will he find us comfortable and content in our position, in no hurry for his return; hoping he will take his time in returning for us instead of rushing in to save us? We he find us distracted and dulled by the cares of this world? Will he find us careless instead of careful? Will he find us sedated instead of stirred up? Will he find us asleep and unaware instead of awake and watching? Will he be able to distinguish us by our lights shining out of the darkness, or will we blend in with no flairs or cries for help at all?

As long as I am fighting, I know I am still in the game. Once I give up, then the battle is lost. But I always remember, we must carry our sword, the Word of God, because Satan is far more powerful than we are. Is God’s Word “abiding in me” that is what I must remember, for it’s His Word that will shoot the flaming arrows, His Word that will sustain me when I am fearful, and His Word that will give me hope. With God, I will always win. Without Him, I will always lose.
