Enemy

Devotional, Wednesday Woman / Friday, July 31st, 2009

“They who seek my life will be destroyed;
they will go to the depths of the earth.
They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.”
Psalm 63:9-10

Dear Father,
Being swayed by a tendency that has actually netted me trouble at various times, I guess I could be labeled a ‘people pleaser.’ As such I don’t like to think I have enemies. I don’t want to contemplate that there are those who seek my destruction, but that is a wrong presumption. I have very real enemies and they stem from the ultimate enemy, the hater of my soul, that old snake, the deceiver, the devil. Now I might not know these enemies on a personal level, although that is a possibility and more likely a probability in a life span.

Since I am Your child, I am automatically entered on the enemy’s hit list, because of his hatred for you. If you want to hurt someone, just mess with their kids and that is what the ancient dragon has done and continues to do. But I don’t need to go around in a paranoid frenzy looking for a devil in every bush.

You have cautioned me to be smart about the foe and tender-footed in my walk amid the world. I don’t believe You want me barricaded behind locked doors in seclusion and fear. We are not called to be spiritual spinsters. Your promise to me is that my enemy has already been defeated and the battle won. Right now I just get to live it out on the game field of planet earth.

Sometimes I wish I could see a fast-forward frame for the victory celebration when terrorism has ceased, wars have ended, families are reunited and the King of Kings and Lord of Lords plants His feet on this earth. Until then, help me to walk in the world but not of the world, reaching out and touching real live people with a real live Savior, in spite of threats, taunts, and terrors of an already doomed enemy. His time is short, but mine is just beginning. Hallelujah, yes and amen!

Love,
Penny
