Thirst

Devotional, Wednesday Woman / Thursday, January 28th, 2010

“O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You;
my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1

Dear Father,
I can feel the intense, deliberate, almost guttural cry of the Psalmist as he cries out to You. How I love the truth that since You are my God I can do the same because I belong to You. This morning I awoke to a longing for more. More of Jesus. I am not satisfied to stay where I am at the moment. I believe sometimes You allow me to go through dry periods, deserts if you will, so that I will hunger and thirst for what You want to give me. It is good every now and then to feel our spiritual hearts rumble and gnaw for Your nourishment. It is good to know what it is like to pant for a drink of living water. Those times make us dig deeper, go farther, want more until knowing You desperately becomes our desire. I also believe in these times we learn to discern what truth is. Real thirst begs for water – not some other kind of beverage. The other may suffice but what my mouth searches for is the pure, unadulterated, life-sustaining, true water. Real hunger wants to be satisfied with protein packed food. Junk food will not do. It might fill a spot but it does not satisfy at this point. Thank You for the times You take me through that might be unpleasant or uncomfortable because they push me to earnestly seek You. Thank You for causing a shepherd boy turned king to expose his heart in writing so that all these years later I would be encouraged. You are the life of my heart and all my innermost being praises and adores You. Come fill my cup so I can be a canteen for anyone seeking Jesus in their desert place.

Love,
Penny
